'GATHER' - Reclaiming the Story of our Food
Dates: 15.March - 16. March, 26. April, 26. July, 21. September, 11. October
Location: This course will take you on a journey to some of the best spots for food in East Sussex (around Hastings)
Fee: 490 £
5 Sessions - 5 different ways to connect to Food.
Late Winter: we will meet the Deer over two days. With reverence and care we will explore what it means to eat meat. From nose to tail we will honour every aspect of this being. Including Ceremony, Butchery, Sausage making, crafting with bones, skin or antler - we will learn about different ways to approach an animal. I will also give you an introduction to tracking deer, deer ecology, as well as share some stories hunting with the Kalahari Bushmen of Namibia.
The Deer will follow us throughout the year in craft, ceremony, Food and medicine.
Early Spring: we will explore wild edible plants. We will learn how to safely navigate an edible landscape in a sustainable, respectful way. We will harvest, prepare and use plants to create a nourishing meal together. I will also give you an introduction to harvesting tree water.
Summer: We are moving along with the season to learn from expert grower Isobel Spence how to grow, harvest and preserve seasonal Food from the vegetable garden. We will look at how to measure nutrition in vegetables and why healthy soil is vital to grow nourishing Food. From Pickling to Fermentation we will learn how to preserve some of the produce..
Late Summer: As the Shoals of Fish gather close to shore we will meet them at the beach for a Session on chasing Seabass and Mackerel which we will hopefully be able to hot smoke right at the Beach.
Autumn: Fungi and Wild Feast: We will once more gather together to Harvest wild Food from the land. This time learning about our wild nuts and berries as well as seasonal Fungi. We will prepare a big shared feast to celebrate the abundance of the year with stories, music and community.

Each course will include a fresh, seasonal lunch and all materials needed for the session. Although each session will teach a different way to connect to food, I recommend booking on the full package for an immersive and cohesive journey into the story of food. Bursary places are available.

The courses will run from 10 - 16.00 in general except the Fishing class as it is depended on the tide.
Who is this course for: Anyone who would like to reconnect to the food they eat or would like to reconnect to the cycles of nature.
You don’t need any prior experience to attend this class.
